Northeastern NC District Workshop – SAVE THE DATES!   May 8 and 9, 2018

This well-known craft workshop has been held for over 50 years! Held annually in May at the Vernon James Center in Plymouth, NC, the workshops are open to all for a small registration fee ($10 per day) and the cost of the class supply kit. Teachers donate their time to teach. Choose from a 1-day or 2-day class, or take two 1-day classes. It’s fun!

The 2018 Northeastern NC Craft Workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 8, and Wednesday, May 9, at the Vernon G. James Research and Extension Center, located at 207 Research Station Road off Highway 32N in Plymouth, NC. Registration is on a “first come – first served” basis. Registration fees are nonrefundable, but are transferable

Class kit fees cover the cost of supplies used in class and are due after your class has been confirmed by letter.

  1. BASKETRY – “Round Mixed Media Basket”: one-day class, Tuesday, May 8.  Participants will create a round basket using several techniques and materials. Spokes (framework) will be a heavy gauge round reed. Techniques include basic twining with smaller natural or dyed round reed, 4 rod wale with round reed, chase weave with bleached cane and a “twine down” border using waxed cotton cord. Other materials including honeysuckle vine, fabric strips and beads may be incorporated for added interest. No two baskets must be exactly the same.

STUDENT SHOULD BRING: A water container for soaking reed, vines and barks; sharp scissors or small pruning shears, an old towel and apron.

  1. BASKETRY TECHNIQUES – “Looped Shell Necklaces and other applications of Looping”: one-day class, Wednesday, May 9. Participants will learn the technique of Looping to create a shell necklace. Each participant will select a shell and a waxed linen or waxed cotton cord from selection provided. Looping stitches will be taught for both right and left-handed individuals to create a netting that encases the shell in a decorative manner.

Day two – Learn to increase and decrease by crocheting rounds. There will be discussion on how to turn a project into a hat or basket.

  1. DECOY CARVING AND PAINTING: two-day class, Tuesday, May 8, and Wednesday, May 9.  Students will learn or sharpen carving skills to carve and paint a 12” long Pintail Drake decoy. Beginners will learn basic decoy carving and experienced carvers will sharpen skills using knives and rasps, with tupelo wood and acrylic paint.  No experience is required, just be in the mood for some fun learning!
